Earlier this year I was blogging about the Olympic Book Challenge, and today I’d like to recommend a book which has become a classic in Kyrgyz literature.
It’s called Jamilia and is written by the famous author Chingiz Aitmatov, whose literary works have been translated into numerous languages.
The historical setting, which on the surface might appear as just another tragic love story, is in actuality a thought-provoking commentary on ancient tribal customs, the horrors of war, the enduring legacy of the human spirit, and the courage of individuals to follow their own hopes and dreams despite the traditional cultural expectations of their surroundings.
